Updates to Moodle for Fall 2025

Updates to Moodle for Fall 2025

We've launched some exciting new features for Moodle. New features include:

See details below about these new features and changes.

Bulk Actions

Bulk Actions

Moodle now has a bulk actions feature, allowing you to move, delete, or duplicate content in bulk. Access it by toggling on edit mode and selecting “bulk actions” in the top right corner of the screen, as shown below.

After you do this a bulk actions menu will appear at the bottom of the screen (below). You can select the activities you'd like to move, duplicate, or delete.

Add a New Activity from Anywhere

Add an Activity from Anywhere

You can now add an activity from anywhere in the course. To do this, toggle on edit mode and look for the dashed lines between activities. Hover over the line and look for a plus sign to appear. Once it appears, you can select it and add the activity of your choice.

Subsections

Subsections

You can now add subsections to your course page for enhanced organization. Subsections can help students by breaking the course content into smaller chunks so they aren't overwhelmed.

To do this, enable edit mode. Click "expand" on the section/week where you'll be using a subsection. Hover over the dashed lines until a plus sign for "add content" appears. Select "subsection," as shown in the image to below.

Drag and Drop Activities from Side Bar

You can now drag and drop activities from the side bar in your course. To do this, go to your course and toggle on edit mode. Expand the side panel on the left of your screen and hover between activities until crossed arrows appear. Once this happens, drag the activity to your desired location.

Find "View All Submissions"

When you go to grade an activity, you’ll find that there’s now a “submissions” tab, in place of the previous “View all submissions” button. The "submissions" tab is located in the activity menu, as shown in the image below.

Assignment Notifications

Assignment Notifications

Students will now receive automated emails about upcoming and overdue assignments. If students find these notifications overwhelming and wish to turn them off, they can go to their personal Moodle Preferences>Notification Settings to turn them off.

Course Visibility & Crosslisted Courses

Course Visibility & Cross-listed Courses

Making Course Visible to Students

Moodle courses used to become visible to students automagically before course start date. Now you will need to manually unhide the course when it is ready for students as outlined here.

Cross-listed Courses

Our enrollment system generates multiple Moodle course shells for cross-listed courses. When building your course content, use the one that displays multiple course reference numbers (CRNs) at the top, as shown in the screenshot below. The image with the check indicates the correct course.

Another way to confirm you have the right Moodle course is to ensure ALL the students you are expecting are enrolled. The good news is that students will not see all the different shells, as the unused ones will remain hidden from their view. To remove unused courses from your My Courses view, select the 3 dots located on the card for a given course, as shown below:

Click the 3 dots to hide the uncrosslisted course from view.
