Research and Digitization Services

The Friends Collection and Earlham College Archives will reproduce some documents or images for members of the Earlham Community and organizations with collections on deposit in our Archive.

Unfortunately, due to changes in staffing, we can no longer provide research and digitization services for patrons who are not affiliated with Earlham or our Archive. However, our collection is open to outside researchers, and patrons are welcome to visit our collections and view the materials in person. See our home page for information on visiting our archive. We would also be happy to provide you with a list of local researchers.

If you have any questions about our policies, please contact our staff at archives@earlham.edu.

Digitization: Earlham and Partner Organizations

We do our best to do research and digitize materials as quickly as possible for our patrons. However, research and digitization are slow processes, and we often get multiple requests per week. Please be aware that it may take a week or two to digitize materials depending on the size of the request. If it’s a large digitization project, a busy time of year, or during a break in the school year, it may take longer. Please plan ahead.

Digitization for Publication

We are willing to reproduce images we own the rights to or are out of copyright for publication. Please contact a member of our staff at archives@earlham.edu for more information. If we approve your request, we ask that you include our preferred citation in your publication and that you send us a courtesy copy when it is published. If staff time is required to complete your order, you will be charged a fee of $25 per image.

Notice on Copyright Restrictions

The copyright law of the United States (title 17, United States Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted material.

Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish a photocopy or other reproduction. One of these specific conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction is not to be “used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research.” If a user makes a request for, or later uses, a photocopy or reproduction for purposes in excess of “fair use,” that user may be liable for copyright infringement.

This institution reserves the right to refuse to accept a copying order if, in its judgment, fulfillment of the order would involve violation of copyright law.
