Library Mission

The Earlham Libraries support the missions of Earlham College, Earlham School of Religion (ESR), and Bethany Theological Seminary by providing access to information resources and facilitating their use. Our patrons include the students, faculty, and staff of Earlham College and its affiliated seminaries. The Friends Collection and College Archives has its own mission.

Library Goals

The Earlham Libraries forward its mission through the following goals:

  • Develop a diverse collection featuring a wide variety of voices and views that meet the needs and interests of patrons as they engage in the lifelong process of teaching and learning.
  • Strive to ensure patrons have equitable access to library information and technological resources.
  • Lead, support, and sponsor programming to foster development of diverse and underrepresented student communities across campus.
  • Offer a program of course-related instruction and research help services.
  • Provide library facilities that promote the use, preservation, and production of information resources.
  • Work closely with on-campus partners such as Information Technology Services (ITS) and the Center for Academic Enrichment to provide coordinated services.
  • Work closely with consortium partners such as the Private Academic Library Network of Indiana (PALNI) and the Academic Libraries of Indiana (ALI).
  • Provide professional development opportunities that stimulate thinking about the improvement of library services and prepare staff to become effective in improving those services.
  • Maintain efficient and effective internal processes to enhance services.
  • Promote awareness of and participate in new developments in librarianship, information management, and public and technical services.
  • Advance awareness of new developments in teaching and learning with technology.
  • Foster and support a visionary environment of creativity and innovation.
  • Support appropriate participation in campus governance and life.
  • Support the missions of the Friends Collection and College Archives and Writing Center.
