Analytics

Vieweing Kaltura analytics

Kaltura provides analytics data to help you understand video engagement by individual user, individual video, or for all your media. It can help you understand which users have watched a video, if users are watching the whole video, or when they stop watching your video. To view analytics for a single video, do the following:

  1. Within My Media (in Moodle), or from Mediaspace (kaltura.earlham.edu), click on a media entry.
  2. Click the graph icon to access analytics.Click the graph to see video analytics.

  1. This stage allows you to view overall engagement with the video, including number of plays, number of viewers, and dropoff rate. The avg. completion rate can be misleading. If every user only watched your video once, then 75% avg. completion rate indicates they only make it ~75% through the video before stopping. However, if they watch part of it again to review a concept, that lowers the avg. completion rate.
  2. To view individual user stats, scroll down and click view engagement per user.

Click "engagement by user" to see individual user activity.

  1.  Total completion rate is a better picture of whether a user watched the whole video. In the screenshot below, the user has a low avg. completion rate (18.6%) based on the number of times they reviewed pieces of the video. However the 100% total completion rate indicates they did play the video the entire way through.

Average completion vs. Total Completion

Playlists and Channels

Setting up playlists and channels

Playlists allow a content owner to group content together for embedding on an external web page. Every time you add or remove an item from the playlist, your embedded player automatically updates to reflect this change.

Channels  allow a content owner to group media together in MediaSpace. The media gallery you see when you log in is a channel. Read the following to learn about examples of playlists and channels:

  1. Scenario A: You have split a long presentation into smaller segments so that you can interject exercises or your own comments in between to provide context. The segments will only make sense if watched in the correct order. The best way to present this is to create a playlist and manually order the videos.
  2. Scenario B: You have a curated collection of media and on each week's topic. Each one is stand alone piece and they can be watched in any order. You can use the Media Gallery feature to organize the videos and restrict access to the people within the class.
  3. Scenario C: You have a video which you would like to be available to people who are not logged into Moodle. You can use the Media Space and set it to public, then it will be open to all. Check with the copyright restrictions before using this option.

  2. Restricted - A user must be logged in to view content and only channel members can contribute content
  3. Private - Only members of a channel can view or contribute content
  4. Shared Repository - Only members of a channel can view and contribute content and content may be published to other channels
