A Note on Subject Headings

As you use this guide, you may notice sections of it that recommend searching for LGBTQ+ material by using subject headings. Subject headings are defined topics set forth by the Library of Congress to help libraries categorize books. If you are interested in learning more about subject headings, check out this resource. See also this article that takes a historical look at queer activism in the realm of subject headings! As you search, you may notice materials assigned subject headings that use outdated terminology, such as "sexual minorities" or "transsexuals." Sometimes language moves much faster than library cataloging. Wherever possible, we have tried to avoid including subject headings with outdated language.
