Lilly Library is currently open to campus. Access is limited to Earlham, ESR and Bethany users only. Users must swipe their campus ID at the front door to gain entrance to the library during regular open hours. Card swipe access is limited to the South entrance door (left side when facing the front entrance)
At this time Community members and other visitors are not permitted to access the Library.
The Friends Collection and College Archives is open by appointment only. Please see their page for Services and Policies During COVID-19 for details. Users may continue to place holds on items from Friends circulating collections (see Grab and Go details below) for pickup at the Lilly Library circulation desk. See the Grab and Go section below for more details on placing holds and how often Friends materials will be pulled for pickup.
Study rooms are closed to all users at this time, due to health and hygiene concerns. Seating arrangements have been adjusted to address social distancing guidelines.
Grab and Go service continues to be available at Lilly Library for students, faculty and staff of Earlham College, ESR, and Bethany who prefer for any reason to minimize their exposure while on campus. This service only applies to books and media owned by Earlham College Libraries. To participate, place a hold request for an item that is owned by Earlham College and currently listed as available in the library catalog.
(To place a hold: Search for items in the catalog, limit Held by Library to Earlham College, click the title of the item and click Request Hold. On the hold form, please choose that you want "Specific Copies or Volumes" and select the copy you want from the Lilly or Friends collections listed).
At this time we are unable to offer pickup services to members of the general community.
Pick up is available during regular library hours. Items must be placed on hold by 8am in order to be available for pickup same day/next business day (i.e. holds placed by 8am Tuesday will be available for pickup Tuesday; items placed on hold after 8am will be available for pickup the following business day). You will receive an email when your items are available for pickup.
Please note: Friends Collection and College Archives materials are pulled Monday-Friday, depending on staff availability. Check for the hold pickup email to verify that your materials are ready before coming in to the library.
Pick up location: Lilly Library Circulation Desk.
User notification: Notices are sent from a firstname.lastname@example.org address and may get caught in your spam filter; if you think your item should have arrived and you haven't seen an email, please check your spam filter.
If you have problems locating an item in our catalog or placing a hold, please contact email@example.com for assistance.
Please continue to use the book drop to return items to the library. The book drop is located to the left of the main entrance when you are facing the library (south side of the main entrance).
Please note that ILL services will be disrupted during the extended winter break and January term. See the below section on InterLibrary Loan updates for more information.
Regular Interlibrary Loan services have resumed for Earlham, ESR, and Bethany students, faculty and staff. Please note that you must be on campus in order to request physical materials through ILL. We cannot ship items to remote users.
Please be aware that incoming physical materials are subject to a COVID-related mandatory 3 day quarantine. After 3 days items will processed for patrons and available to pick up. These guidelines help ensure the safety of our users.
PALShare services are also now available, but these items are also subject to the 3 day quarantine of incoming materials.
ILL services are now provided through Tipasa. Tipasa functions similarly to our previous ILL system. For more details on Tipasa, see the InterLIbrary Loan section of this page (below) or go to the ILL web page.
The Friends Collection and College Archives are open for research by appointment only to students, faculty and staff of Earlham College, ESR, and Bethany. Members of the Earlham Community can place holds on books in the Friends Circulating Collection. Holds from the Friends Collection will be available for pickup at the Circulation desk on the main floor of Lilly Library. For more information on available services for the Friends Collection and College Archives and for the most up-to-date information on reference and digitization services, please see their page for Services and Policies During COVID-19.
Library eResources are available to users from the campus community who are currently off-campus. To access our Databases, please use the links on our A-Z database list, and enter your Earlham College username (without @earlham.edu; no capital letters) and password when prompted. If you have problems accessing any of our databases or other eResources, please check our page on Off-Campus connection help or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
You can continue to access other eResources (ebooks, electronic journals/articles, etc.) through the library catalog or the Journal Title Advanced search. Some providers are making more of their resources freely accessible during this time. Those items have been included in our A-Z database list or added to the library catalog for ease of access.
Streaming films can be accessed by the campus community through the library catalog, or by going directly to Kanopy or Theatre in Video. Earlham can also obtain streaming films through Swank Digital Campus: contact email@example.com for assistance. Due to copyright, we do not rip library DVDs to post online. If no Earlham options are available, students may have to use personal Amazon, Hulu, or Netflix memberships they might already have access to, or pay less than $5 to rent a title from a commercial provider (e.g. Amazon, iTunes, Google Play, etc.). Faculty are encouraged to be flexible.
If you need research help or other assistance from Librarians, please see our Research Help guide to contact librarians via email or chat or schedule an appointment.
Access to existing guides for Fall Semester classes is still provided through the library web pages.
Finally, Library Subject guides are also still available for reference.
Please see our Hours page for details on hours for Lilly Library and the Science and Technology Commons Service Desk.
If you are seeking information on moving your courses online, please see the course continuity guide.
If you need to coordinate with library staff regarding the purchase of ebooks, email firstname.lastname@example.org.
Scanning services cannot be provided at this time.
Please see the information above for details about placing books on hold for pickup at the circulation desk, or reference our Library hours for times when you can come in to select materials on your own.
Books checked out from the Lilly Library collection prior to winter break will have their due dates adjusted over the break to make sure they are not due until the start of Spring 1 classes. You will get an email when your due date is adjusted. If you have questions about your new due date, please contact us at email@example.com.
PALShare and ILL items cannot automatically be renewed. If you have one of these items checked out that is due over the break, you will need to request a renewal through Tipasa (for ILL) or email firstname.lastname@example.org to request a renewal (PALShare). Many libraries will be closed during this time, so it may take longer than usual to get a response to your request.
There is no need to return items by mail if they are due over Winter break or January term if you are returning to campus for Spring 1. Simply return them when you come back to campus
If you have library materials, ILL items, or PALShare items that are due, please return them to the library as soon as you are able.
Materials may be returned to Lilly Library via the drop slot (to the left of the main doors to Lilly Library).
Users who are off-campus may return items by mail if desired (mail to: Lilly Library 801 National Road West Richmond IN 47374). If you have questions or concerns about returning library materials, or are unable to return items for any reason, please email email@example.com.
Earlham, ESR, and Bethany users may now come to the library during our open hours to check out materials. You may continue to place things on hold through the library catalog for pickup at the circulation desk.
The Friends Collection and College Archives remains closed at this time. You may continue to place holds on items from their circulating collection to pick up at the Lilly circulation desk. See above for more details.
Disruption to ILL services over winter break
ILL services will be limited during the Campus-wide shut down, December 19, 2020 -- January 3, 2021. Users will not be able to place new requests for books and other physical items during this time, and there will be no incoming items. Please plan accordingly.
New requests for books and other physical items will be disabled starting December 11, 2020, because items requested will not arrive before the campus closure.
Article requests will still be accepted, but any requests that require staff intervention will not be processed.
PALShare requests will not be processed or received during this time.
During winter break and January term items will arrive slower than usual due to delays in shipping, lower staffing levels, and closures of libraries who supply materials. Please plan for delays in receiving items.
Email notifications for ILL requests now come from: firstname.lastname@example.org
We recommend that you whitelist this address to ensure ILL emails do not get caught in your spam filter.
If you have questions, please email us at email@example.com. Please see our web page on Library Services during COVID-19 for additional details.
Thank you for your patience as we do our best to serve you during this challenging time.
