TIP Workshop: RSS Feeds: What is an RSS Feed?

What is an RSS Feed

WHAT and WHY

  • An RSS feed allows the contents of a website to be sent to a reader
  • Handy for websites that update their content frequently

HOW

  • RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication, Rich Site Summary or RDF Site Summary
  • Formats for "syndication" end in extensions .xml or .rss or .rdf
    • Symbols indicating a website with an RSS feed:
  • An "RSS reader" or "aggregator" is needed to produce the content
  • The reader subscribes to the RSS feed using a reader/aggregator
    • New content delivered as a site is updated
