Welcome to the Student Moodle Help Guide! Here you will find  information about navigating Moodle as a student. Click the tabs on the left to learn about topics such as finding your class, accessing announcements, utilizing forums, etc. If you do not find the information you're looking for after reading this guide, email to request further assistance!

Finding Your Classes

You will access your course via Moodle (Earlham College) or Seminaries Moodle (Bethany and ESR). If you do not see your class in Moodle, check with the Registrar to confirm your registration. If you need access to a class after the semester ends, have your professor contact for assistance To access your classes during the semester, do the following:

  1. Go to the your Moodle homepage and select my courses.
  2. If you wish to access a course that has not started yet, click the all button to access the dropdown menu. Once the class starts, it will become a part of the section entitled "in progress."

Changing your Preferred Name

Follow these instructions to change your preferred name in The Heart/Banner Self-Service. These changes will automatically update Moodle. Note there may be a slight delay, as Moodle only updates Banner information every few hours.

To add your personal pronouns, do the following: 

  1. Log into Moodle then click your name in the top right of the screen.

  2. Choose  preferences, followed by edit profile.  

  3. Scroll down to the pronouns.You may enter your pronouns in the box.

  4. Click update profile to save your changes.

  5. If you wish to change your personal pronouns in The Heart/Banner, click these instructions

Change Your Profile Picture

To change your profile picture, do the following:

The picture from your Student ID card will automatically show in Moodle and appear in the class roster. If you would prefer to use a different picture, you can change it, as having your picture in Moodle will help you make a connection to your peers and teachers. In order to change your picture, do the following: 

  1. Log into Moodle and click your name in the top right screen. Go to preferences,  edit profile, and then scroll to the user picture area.
  2. Drag your desired image to the new picture box. Your file should be .jpg or .png and that it will be automatically resized to a 100X100 pixel square. 


Class Announcements

Accessing Announcements

The announcements forum acts as an announcements tool for your Moodle course. Only instructors and TAs can post to announcements, and by default, posts made to announcements are emailed to class members. Students cannot leave replies to the posts, as it is a one-way tool. To access announcements, check both email and Moodle on a daily basis. 



Checking Your Grades

Checking your Grades

The grades feature allows you to see your grades and  feedback from teachers. To access grades, do the following: 

  1. Click the link for the class you're interested in reviewing, followed by the word grades on the top menu of your course.
  2. Your grades may not be up to date. Contact your professor if there are any questions about a specific grade. 
  3. To access your final grades after a semester ends, click under the student tab of TheHeart.

Your instructor may ask you to submit a word file or image for an assignment. To submit the assignment, do the following:

  1. Search for a box where you can drag the file and drop it into the assignment.
  2. Once the file or files are in the submission box, click on save submission to finish. You can verify the submission on the next screen.

Your instructor may create quizzes in Moodle. When taking quizzes, consider the following bits of information: 

  1. Your quiz may have a time limit.  Be sure that you have enough time to finish the quiz.
  2. Quizzes will often have a due date and time, so be sure to note when the quiz is due. Always contact your teacher if you have questions about the quiz requirements.


Posting to a Forum

Posting to Forums 

When you initially post to a forum, there will be a 30 minute delay which will allow you to edit. Keep this in mind when completing forum assignments!


Using Kaltura for Your Assignments

Kaltura is Earlham’s video creation, storage, and management platform. To access the platform, visit the following locations: 

  1. The My Media link located at the top of Moodle
  2. Visit to log into Kaltura viewing and editing options outside of Moodle.
  3. Kaltura Mediaspace mobile app (aka KMS Go). You can download it from your app store. Use the site address to connect the app to our content

Note that Kaltura allows you to:

  1. Record new video with a single or double video input (ex. your camera and your screen, your laptop camera and an external camera)
  2. Upload existing video directly from a file, YouTube, or Zoom 
  3. Search across all your videos, including metadata (title, description, tags) AND text and from within the video
  4. Edit your video

Uploading Videos

Kaltura is an easy way to share videos with classmates and professors. To learn how to upload videos to Kaltura, watch the video you see below.

Adding and Editing Captions

Captions are an essential element of any video, as it allows all individuals to understand what's happening. To add captions, do the following:

  1. Once the Kaltura video has been selected, click actions and +caption & enrich.
  2. Click the edit (pencil icon) button for the captions you previously added.
  3. Make any edits on this screen. There is a play button to view the video with accompanying captions. To edit the text or the corresponding time code, click on these items directly. When done, click save.
  4. Click the back button to go back to your video.

Sharing Links to Your Kaltura Video

Public links most be created in the Kaltura Mediaspace. To access this, go to After logging in to the site, do the following: 

  1. Click on your name (top right), and select my media from the menu.
  2. Click the title of the video you wish to share, as seen in the image below. 
  3. Under publishing status, choose unlisted
  4. Under share, you'll now see a link that you can copy and paste. Users do not need to have access to Moodle or Kaltura to use these links. Copy and paste the link to share your video. 


Creating Kaltura Videos for Discussion Forums

You can create Kaltura videos and upload them to discussion forums to create engaging conversation. After understanding this, do the following: 

  1. Go to the discussion forum in which you need to post a video response.
  2. Click add discussion topic,  immediately followed by advanced. After this, you will need to click the rainbow spark shown below.The Kaltura Logo, a Colorful Rainbow Spark
  3. After you have clicked the spark, click add new to access a dropdown menu. Once in this menu, click express capture, as shown below.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                             Add New Dropdown.   4. Click the red button to begin recording.
  5. When you are finished, click the square stop button located next to the recording timer.
  6. If you are satisfied with the recording, click use this. If you wish to record again, click record again. You can record until you are satisfied, be it one time or 6 times.
  7. When you are finished recording and have clicked use this, click save and embed.
  8. After you have done this, be sure to click post to forum.


Using Perusall as a Student

Using Perusall

Perusall is a tool for annotating text. You will use this tool in class to read text together and leave comments  for your classmates and teacher. You may also have assignments which use Perusall. To learn more about Perusall, watch the video linked below.
