In part because of N sslein-Volhard's own research on the zebrafish, it is now possible to decipher the molecular genetic mechanisms that lead to production of colors in animal skin and its appendages and control its pattern and distribution.

A collection of 30 traditional Syrian and Lebanese folktales infused with new life by Lebanese women, collected by Najla Khoury. While civil war raged in Lebanon, Najla Khoury traveled with a theater troupe, putting on shows in marginal areas where electricity was a luxury, in air raid shelters, Palestinian refugee camps, and isolated villages. Their plays were largely based on oral tales, and she combed the country in search of stories. An I-Novel by
Minae Mizumura's An I-Novel is a semi-autobiographical work that takes place over the course of a single day in the 1980s. Minae is a Japanese expatriate graduate student who has lived in the United States for two decades but turned her back on the English language and American culture. After a phone call from her older sister reminds her that it is the twentieth anniversary of their family's arrival in New York, she spends the day reflecting in solitude and over the phone with her sister about their life in the United States, trying to break the news that she has decided to go back to Japan and become a writer in her mother tongue. Published in 1995, this formally daring novel radically broke with Japanese literary tradition. It liberally incorporated English words and phrases, and the entire text was printed horizontally, to be read from left to right, rather than vertically and from right to left. In a luminous meditation on how a person becomes a writer, Mizumura transforms the "I-novel," a Japanese confessional genre that toys with fictionalization. An I-Novel tells the story of two sisters while taking up urgent questions of identity, race, and language. Above all, it considers what it means to write in the era of the hegemony of English--and what it means to be a writer of Japanese in particular. Although Sand had broken with the Church several years earlier, she nevertheless continued to believe in an omnipotent God, and her novel makes the distinction, as Angel's protector, Father Alexis, puts it, "between the authority of faith and the application of this authority in the hands of men." As translator Patricia J. F. Worth argues in her introduction, the novel's emphasis on freedom of inquiry, benevolence, and moral reform inspired other nineteenth-century writers, including Fyodor Dostoyevsky, Matthew Arnold, and Henry James, and the novel is also relevant to twenty-first-century discussions of religious authority and rigid adherence to doctrine.

Claribel Alegría, born in Estelí, Nicaragua, in 1924, is one of the great voices in twentieth-century Latin American poetry. She left her family's Nicaraguan coffee plantation to spend her childhood in exile in El Salvador. Her writing of the 1950s and 1960s reflects the views of the "Committed Generation" of Central America, seeking social and political justice for its citizens. She shared the Casas de las Americas poetry prize in 1978 with Nicaraguan poet Gioconda Belli. In 1979, when the Sandinistas overthrew the Somoza regime, she returned to Nicaragua to help it rebuild. While both countries claim her, she credits the 1980 assassination of Salvadoran archbishop Oscar Romero as the pivotal event of her revolutionary commitment. Alegría's mature work reflects her anger and sense of loss over the murdered and "disappeared" throughout Latin America. "Because of them I called myself a cemetery," she notes. She praises women poets giving voice to the victims of state terror. Her major works include I Survive (1978), Flowers from the Volcano (1981), Sorrow (1999), and Casting Off (2003). In this volume, published in Madrid as Otredad in 2011, she separates her writing from her daily existence: "She who writes is the other one."

Kang Kyeong-ae (1906-1944) was a Korean writer whose stories are remarkable for their rejection of colonialism, patriarchy, and ethnic nationalism during a period when such views were truly radical and dangerous. Born in what is now North Korea, Kang wrote all her fiction in Manchuria during the Japanese occupation and witnessed the violence and daily struggles experienced by ethnic Koreans living in the Japanese puppet state of Manchukuo. Kang s riveting stories are full of sensitivity, defiance, and a deep understanding of the oppressed people she wrote about.
This collection, beautifully translated by Anton Hur, contains all the Korean-language short stories by Kang Kyeong-ae. Sang-kyung Lee's excellent introduction provides deep insight into Kang's achievements and the social and historical contexts in which she wrote.
