The Academic Dean and Vice President for Academic Affairs asked the Libraries to develop a policy for teaching faculty carrel allocation in Lilly Library. Until now, "faculty" carrels were assigned on a first-come, first-served basis via a wait list that includes graduate students and professionals with Earlham connections. The new policy written below originates due to (1) wait list concern; (2) questions about the extent to which the carrels ought to be reserved for teaching faculty use; and (3) issues involving workspace for retired teaching faculty.
Effective for the academic year 2013-14:
Lilly Library carrels will be reserved for use by active or retired teaching faculty undertaking work that directly benefits the College -- e.g. lab session or course instruction, health careers advising, grant pursuit, research for publication.
Each spring the Library Director will ask the Academic Dean and Vice President for Academic Affairs if any teaching faculty:
Teaching faculty who meet any of these criteria will be prioritized to use a carrel:
If a wait list develops based on these criteria, the Library Director will communicate with all involved parties.
Teaching faculty interested in using a carrel can also contact the Library Director directly, who will record their interest and bring it to the attention of the Academic Dean and Vice President for Academic Affairs.
