Publication Date: 2010
Setting opera within a variety of contexts - social, aesthetic, historical - Lindenberger illuminates a form that has persisted in recognizable shape for over four centuries. The study examines the social entanglements of opera, for example the relation of Mozart's Abduction from the Seraglio and Verdi's Il trovatore to its initial and later audiences. It shows how modernist opera rethought the nature of theatricality and often challenged its viewers by means of both musical and theatrical shock effects. Using recent experiments in neuroscience, the book demonstrates how different operatic forms developed at different periods to create new ways of exciting a public.
Masculinity in Opera
Publication Date: 2013
This book addresses the ways in which masculinity is negotiated, constructed, represented, and problematized within operatic music and practice. Operating from a position of sympathy with feminist and queer approaches and anchored by musical analysis the contributions take an interdisciplinary approach by also engaging with theatre, popular music, and cultural musicology scholarship. Essays are historically dispersed from seventeenth to twentieth- first-century operatic works and practices.
Between Opera and Cinema
Publication Date: 2002
Leading scholars of opera and film explore the many ways these two seemingly unrelated genres have come together from the silent-film era to today.
The Legacy of Opera
Publication Date: 2013
The Legacy of Opera considers some of the ways in which opera's influence has informed our understanding of and approach to the musical stage, from the multiple perspectives of the ideological, historical, corporeal and artistic. With contributions from international scholars in music theatre, its chapters explore both canonic and experimental examples of music theatre, spanning a period from the seventeenth century to the present day.
The Strange Career of Porgy and Bess
Publication Date: 2012
Examines the opera's long history of invention and reinvention as a barometer of twentieth-century American expectations about race, culture, and the struggle for equality. Expertly weaving together the wide-ranging debates over the original novel, Porgy, and its adaptations on stage and film with a history of its intimate ties to Charleston, The Strange Career of "Porgy and Bess" uncovers the complexities behind one of our nation's most long-lived cultural touchstones.
