This dictionary not only identifies terms and biblical figures but also examines them from the perspective of "reception history"--the history of the Bible's effect on its readers. Biblical books, passages, and characters certainly played important roles in the history of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, but they also influenced other religious traditions, preachers, writers, poets, artists, and filmmakers. The study of such cultural effects of the Bible is an emerging field, and this work promises to open new avenues of exploration.

Since its emergence a few years ago, postcolonial biblical criticism has witnessed swift expansion and development in Biblical Studies. This critical approach has been increasingly applied to biblical texts as well as modern and postmodern interpretations and interpreters of these texts, yielding an ever-growing body of dissertations, scholarly articles, and volumes. In the process, this approach has become increasingly sophisticated as well in matters of method and theory. This Postcolonial Commentary on the New Testament Writings represents a critical benchmark in postcolonial biblical criticism. It places the reality and ramifications of imperial-colonial frameworks and relations at the centre of biblical criticism. They show, among other things, how texts and interpretations construct and/or relate to their respective imperial-colonial contexts; foreground literary, rhetorical, and ideological marks of coloniality and postcoloniality in both texts and interpretations; reveal how postcolonial reading strategies disrupt and destabilize hegemonic biblical criticism; and engage in critical dialogue with the visions and projects identified in texts as well as in interpretations. His training with the Jesuits, mostly in Toronto, introduced him to biblical scholarship and the thought of the distinguished Jesuit theologian Bernard Lonergan. He completed his biblical studies at the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome, writing a Doctorate in 1970 under the direction of Norbert Lohfink, SJ. His publications consist of books and articles centered on the sources of the Pentateuch, and focus on questions about truth and meaning of biblical texts. His main concern has been to exploit the clarity achieved in Lonergan''s model of theological method, in order to redefine the tasks of biblical interpretation. He is the author of Interpretation and Bible, andInterpreting the Penteteuch, published by The Liturgical Press. William R. Farmer is emeritus professor of New Testament at Perkins School of Theology, and research scholar at the University of Dallas. At Cambridge he studied with C. H. Dodd while completing a degree in philosophy of Religion and Christian Ethics. His Doctoral work at Union Theological Seminary was with John Knox. Farmer began writing on the social history of pre-70 Judaism and thereafter entered the field of synoptic studies. From 1965 to 1989 he worked closely with Albert C. Outler. His recent publications focus on the problem of Christian origins. Farmer is a Guggenheim Fellow and a Fellow of the International Institute for Gospel Studies. He was an invited Visiting Fellow at Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge, in the spring of 1995. David Laird Dungan was born in China, the son of Presbyterian missionaries. An ordained Presbyterian minister, he serves as Lindsay Young Distinguished Professor of Humanities in the Department of Religious Studies at the University of Tennessee. He completed a degree in theology at McCormick Theological Seminary in 1962 and obtained his doctorate from Harvard Divinity School in 1967, working with Krister Stendal and Helmut Koester. His early writings focused on the sayings of Jesus in the letters of Paul and on ancient documents relevant to study of the Gospels. He is broadly published in synoptic studies. Armando J. Levoratti is Professor of Old Testament at the Seminario Mayor in La Plata, Argentina. He is a member of the Pontifical Biblical Commission and the editor of Revista Bibli
