SOAN/ENST 327: Indigenous Peoples and Environmental Justice: Home

Taught by Deb Jackson, Fall 2012

Welcome

Assignment for Essay #4

For this essay assignment, you will need to do some independent research on an indigenous group other than Australian Aboriginals, First Nations in Canada, or Native Americans in the U.S.

To choose your topic, begin by visiting the Cultural Survival website and click on “What We Do” and the “Who Are Indigenous Peoples.” This will help you determine whether or not a group you have in mind qualifies as “indigenous.” Also, be sure to read the section at the bottom of this page titled “Indigenous Peoples and the Environment” as this might help stimulate your thinking on topics.

  • This essay should focus on a particular environmental (in)justice issue for a particular indigenous population, group, or community.
  • While you can use non-scholarly sources (such as the Cultural Survival website and other web resources) for basic information, your main sources for this essay need to be scholarly articles or book chapters.
  • You’ll need at least four scholarly sources.
  • You must include a “References Cited” page listing all references (both scholarly and popular) in APA, ASA, or Chicago style, and indicate which style you’re using.

Topics must be approved in advance. Deadline for topic approval is Friday, December 7 (last day of classes).

Essay #4 is due Thursday, December 13, by 11:59 p.m.
